<image:title>Christian Purnell - Christian Purnell</image:title>
<image:caption>Undergraduate School: Carleton College Major: Political Science Minor: Economics Recommended Book: "A Brief History of Time" - Stephen Hawking Christian admittedly understood only a small portion of the book, but the book was written in a way that encouraged him to feel humbled rather than discouraged by what he didn't know. An important lesson for college. Post-Grad Job: Paralegal in Washington DC Christian Purnell graduated from Carleton College in the spring of 2017 with a major in Political Science and a minor in Economics. While in high school, Christian was most impacted by the Director of Portland Tennis and Education, Danice Brown. Danice taught Christian the importance and privilege of expectation. She encouraged him to take moon shots but grounded him with the reminder than many of our greatest challenges are here in our community. Diane Harlan taught Christian's English class and helped him with his final IB paper. She challenged Christian to have high expectations for his work while also being able to thoroughly enjoy the whole process, from the reading to the final edits. Christian really cherishes that approach and believes it was of great value throughout his education. Christian participated in Lincoln's Constitution Team which was his favorite extracurricular activity. He found it to be a lot of fun and an immense challenge. He believes this early exposure to philosophy and the law shaped his studies and his early career. Trying to pinpoint one accomplishment as his best so far was hard for Christian. He thinks that every time he does something that scares him, such as rock climbing, or starting a job he is unfamiliar with, he feels the most accomplished. Christian now works full time as a paralegal in Washington DC. He works in Antitrust in the Department of Justice. We are proud of your achievements Christian!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Undergraduate School: Duke University Major: Global Health and Evolutionary Anthropology Minor: Chemistry Recommended Book: "Behind the Beautiful Forevers" – Katherine Boo It intertwines the stories of characters living in the largest slum in Mumbai, and the book is an incredibly honest depiction of the dynamics of an underserved community. Graduate School: University of California, San Francisco Medical School Christina Schmidt graduated from Duke University in the spring of 2017 with majors in Global Health and Evolutionary Anthropology and a minor in Chemistry. As a student at Lincoln, many teachers and mentors played important roles in shaping her growth as an individual and a scholar. One particularly important mentor to her was Alison Brody, her constitution team coach. Constitution team was incredibly formative in helping her foster a genuine love of learning. As a mentor, Alison pushed her to work harder than she ever had before and showed her that she was capable of achieving goals that initially seem impossible. While at Lincoln, her most meaningful extracurricular activity was working with Amigos de Las Americas. As a volunteer with Amigos, she spent a summer in Nicaragua teaching children about human rights and working on various community development projects. Her work with Amigos as a volunteer and subsequently as a volunteer trainer ignited her passion for Global Health and continues to influence her perspectives on international development work. During her senior year and first year out of college she worked at Nivi, a small start-up seeking to increase access to reproductive health services in Kenya through the use of mobile phones. When she first joined Nivi, it was just launching its first pilot product. Today, Nivi has over 10,000 users and is continuing to grow under the leadership and direction of its expanding team. Being able to build new products from the ground up and see these products impact the lives of thousands of women has been her most meaningful accomplishment to date. In the summer of 2018, she started her first year of medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. Way to go Christina!</image:caption>

<image:caption>School: Dartmouth College Major: Computer Science Minor: Mathematics Recommended Book: "Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future" - Ashlee Vance Post-Grad Job: CollegePulse Start-Up in Palo Alto, California At Lincoln, Robin was most impacted by math teacher Ricardo Alonso. Robin credits him with providing a strong foundation in math that allowed him to be successful in computer science and math in his future endeavors. He was always excited to go to math class with Mr. Alonso because of his great teaching and good nature. Looking back, Robin believes that the enthusiasm Mr. Alonso instilled continues to have a major positive impact on him. Robin's favorite extracurricular activity at Lincoln was participating in the Constitution Team. Being a part of the team greatly improved his speaking skills and reasoning abilities. His confidence in both of those areas grew during Constitution Team and is still with him. In addition, the experience as a whole was one of the most intense and rewarding experiences in his life. During his time at Dartmouth, Robin received early induction into Phi Beta Kappa. This is a distinction reserved for the top two percent of each class academically. Robin considers this his greatest accomplishment in life so far. He also points out that being able to continue his academic performance at Dartmouth speaks to Lincoln’s ability to prepare students for the next level of education. As an undergraduate student, Robin started a side project that began to take off during his senior year. In September of 2017, he had signed a full time offer with a technology company in New York, but later decided to focus on his own project after he finished college. His startup, College Pulse, provides a more effective approach to collecting public opinion data within communities. The startup has been funded by YCombinator, the Silicon Valley accelerator program that has produced successful companies such as AirBnB and DropBox. College Pulse currently consists of the two founders and several employees, and is based out of Palo Alto, California. Keep up the good work Robin!</image:caption>

At Lincoln, Garrett feels that two of his math teachers had the greatest positive impact on him and his success. Those two people are Mr. Tinling and Mr. Hamilton. They both encouraged his curiosity in mathematics and mentored him in ways that are still impacting him today. He believes that they are the only reason why he has been tutoring math for the last six years, and why he would like to teach his own classroom one day. Garrett’s favorite extracurricular activity at Lincoln was playing and watching sports. He thinks that nothing was more fun than being with his friends and supporting his school, either on the field or in stands. Garrett considers getting admitted to Harvey Mudd College, and having since graduated, as one of his greatest accomplishments so far in his life. One piece of advice Garrett would give to an incoming first year at Lincoln is "Surround yourself with people who value you, those are the friendships that will last." He recommends finding activities and people that they want to be around, and not giving time and attention to those you do not. We're looking forward to following your career, Garrett!</image:caption>

She is currently majoring in Business Administration and minoring in both Spanish and Communication Design. At Lincoln, Maya was greatly impacted by English teacher Mark Halpern, claiming he is the best teacher she has ever had. While in his class, Maya noticed that he was invested in every single student and embraced an authentic and unique teaching method. The way he taught English literature led Maya to become uncharacteristically interested in books in a way she never thought she would be. Mr. Halpern became Maya’s closest mentor and advisor. In addition to helping her write her extended essay, Mr. Halpern was someone she could go to for advice about college, life and what she wanted to pursue professionally. Maya’s favorite extracurricular activity in high school was track and field. She loves to compete and through track and field she was able to do so while making lifelong friends. She found it to be the perfect combination of a supportive community and an environment that encouraged athletic accomplishments. So far in her life, Maya believes her greatest accomplishment is starting her own company, Glimpse Careers. She had so much trouble figuring out what she wanted to pursue as a career, she figured that others could use a service that gives them a glimpse of what the careers they are interested in are really like. The company is a job shadow connections agency. The experience has been fun, exhausting, inspiring and extremely educational for her. Maya is spending her 2018 summer in Taiwan Taipei working as a business development and marketing intern at RedString Match Inc. Beautifully written and captivating, but also contains a huge amount of information we all should be aware of. Jamie Bikales will begin his undergraduate career in the fall of 2018 at Harvard University. He plans to major in Government and minor in East Asian Studies. During his time at Lincoln, Jamie was most impacted by his speech and debate coach, Jenny Owen. Jamie was on the team for four years, and Jenny helped him develop self-confidence, public speaking and life skills that will help him far into the future. Jamie’s favorite extracurricular activity at Lincoln was Constitution Team. He learned about politics and gained an interest in current events. More importantly, he learned the values of commitment and teamwork. Jamie is very proud of his journalism. He believes that through journalism he is able to empower people who don’t traditionally have a voice and protect them from abuse by those in power. His greatest accomplishment has been a six-month investigation he conducted into the reporting process for sexual misconduct by teachers at Lincoln, which he hopes helped to empower victims and prevent future abuses. <image:caption>Undergraduate: University of Denver Major: International Studies and Public Policy Minor: Leadership Studies Recommended Book: "Code Name Verity" – Elizabeth Wein Heartfelt and eloquent historical fiction novel, recalls the friendship between two young women during World War Two and the hardships faced during the conflict. Caitlyn Aldersea started at University of Denver in the fall of 2019. She plans to double major in International Studies and Public Policy, with a minor in Leadership Studies. As a student at Lincoln, Caitlyn feels that her teacher Hanisi Acceta had the most positive impact on her and her success. Ms. Acceta welcomed Caitlyn into the leadership program when she was a shy freshman. Under her mentorship, Caitlyn blossomed into a more mature, outgoing, and inclusive leader. Caitlyn finds Ms. Acceta’s selflessness to be truly inspiring, and she aspires to achieve the same leadership style in her own life. Outside of school, Caitlyn found that Student Government was her favorite activity. While the work was difficultat times, the results were well worth the stress. Caitlyn will be forever grateful for the privilege of representing the student body as the first female ASB Co-President. In this role, Caitlyn had to represent diverse opinions, ideas and experiences which was no easy feat. Running a majority of the school’s events was a source of excitement for Caitlyn, especially since she was living a double life as ASB Co-President and the Lincoln Cardinal Mascot! Caitlyn is most proud of her ability to speak Arabic. She found a passion for learning the language when she was writing her IB Extended Essay, in which she compared the UN reaction to the alleged use of chemical weapons from the Iran-Iraq War to the Syrian Civil War. Since she sees a future in Middle Eastern affairs and international politics, she decided she needed to learn how to speak Arabic, a challenging feat for any native english speaker. She now feels like she could navigate an Arabic-speaking country with basic language. In early 2020, Caitlyn was in the final selection process for the Critical Language Scholarship funded by the U.S. State Department. If selected, she would be able to study Arabic fully funded for 10 weeks in Amman, Jordan with 20 hours a classroom time a week intertwined with cultural exchange events with students from all over Jordan and the U.S. Good luck, Caitlyn, we can’t wait to see what you accomplish!</image:caption>

Katherine Lochner will begin at the University of Washington as a freshman in the Fall of 2020. She plans to major in Biology and minor in Spanish. Ms. Abens, the Photography teacher, transformed the way Katherine views photography and the arts. Katherine also always felt that her classroom was a welcoming environment where she could escape any stress. Katherine appreciated that Ms. Abens door was always open to talk about anything. In Ms. Abens, Katherine found a mentor and a friend who “taught [her] so much about creativity, exploration and open-mindedness, both in the darkroom and in life.” Katherine also notes that all of the teachers and staff at Lincoln helped her throughout her high school experience and positively impacted her development as a student, for which she feels grateful. TEDxYouth was Katherine’s favorite extracurricular activity during her time in high school. TEDxYouth is an independently organized TED event featuring young speakers from the Portland area. Katherine was part of the organizational team that put the event together. She found this to be rewarding in many ways, most notably the leadership experience she gained and the amazing students she was able to meet. So far in her life, Katherine’s greatest accomplishment is winning the 200 breaststroke at the OSU State Champion meet. She had been swimming for 8 years and had a goal of winning the event for awhile. Having her hard work pay off was very rewarding. <image:caption>Undergraduate: University of Southern California Planned Major: Global Health, International Relations Recommended Book: "Excellent Sheep" - William Deresiewicz A meaningful read for any high school student, but especially at an academically competitive school such as Lincoln. The book provides perspective on what students should hope to get out of the college experience. Danny Luo started at the University of Southern California in the fall of 2020. He plans to earn a dual degree in Global Health and International Relations. Ms. Beck, HL Math teacher at Lincoln, had a significant positive impact on Danny's learning. Ms. Beck taught him more than just Math - she taught him how to think in general. Danny has found that the critical thinking skills and analytical problem-solving approach he learned from Ms. Beck have been extremely helpful in his academic pursuits, as well as life in general. While Danny was a student at Lincoln, his favorite extracurricular activity was the tennis team. It was an incredibly rewarding experience and made the second half of the year so much fun. For Danny, the tennis team provided a second family of teammates and coaches that he couldn't be more grateful for. Danny continues to wake up every day, excited to challenge himself and grow as an individual. He considers this his greatest accomplishment in life so far. In the summer of 2020, Danny was given an opportunity to intern in China. He is unsure what will happen now, given the current global health circumstances, but hopes everything will work out. Abani will be attending Brown University in the Fall of 2020. He plans to earn a dual degree in Molecular and Cell Biology. Abani had two people at Lincoln that had a positive impact on his experience. Two Lincoln staff members had a positive impact on Abani during his time as a student. The first was IB coordinator Kim Bliss, who helped Abani to manage the many requirements of Lincoln's IB Program. The second was former Lincoln Vice President, James McGee, who founded the Brothers of Color Club at Lincoln and looked out for Abani during his time at Lincoln. The Brothers of Color Club at Lincoln was Abani’s most enjoyed extra-curricular. Abani described his time as a member of this affinity club for male students of color established in 2015 as "a great community to be involved in as a person of color." So far in his life, Abani considers his summer internship working in the Nakai Genetics Lab at OHSU one of his best accomplishments. <image:caption>Undergraduate: Babson College Major: Finance Minor: Architecture Recommended Book: "Excellent Sheep" – William Deresiewicz Summer 2018 Plans: TILE.org and Energy.org, two of his own non-profits Michael Ioffe is a rising sophomore at Babson College. He is currently majoring in Finance and minoring in Architecture. At Lincoln, Michael was positively impacted by multiple members of the faculty. Mrs. Chapman, Mr. Bailey, Mr. Hamilton, and Mr. Hooper, all took the time out of their busy schedules to talk with him, enlighten him, and generally make Michael a better human being. As a result of their support and guidance, Michael has gained clarity about what he wants to do in life and what he is living for very early. He says that Lincoln’s faculty taught him to feel strongly about the problems he saw and faced and to take action in a meaningful way, while simultaneously teaching him to take time and really appreciate the minutiae of life. Michael’s favorite extracurricular activity at Lincoln was his participation in the passing of the May 2017 Construction Bond. He spent a large part of his high school career working on the Bond. He says it was a collaborative effort between Portland Public Schools, the Lincoln community, and Goose Hollow residents. His work gave him insight into how the buildings we inhabit are brought to reality. His greatest accomplishment so far has been being a great older brother to his sister, Celine, Michael is currently working on two of his own non-profits, TILE.org and Energy.org. In January of 2019, Michael launched Arist.co, the first text message university. Michael and his friend Riley Wilson, another Lincoln High School graduate, became fascinated with the education problems in Yemen. They learned that a higher percentage of the world population had access to text messages than access to internet. This knowledge led them to create the first text message course. For each course purchased, Arist will be donating one course to a person in need. The courses are taught by professors from around the country and messages are sent to your phone every morning. During Sam’s time at Lincoln, a couple of people had profound impacts on them. Aisha Beck was Sam’s Math teacher for three years and helped them understand the benefits of truly challenging themself. Lisa Klein-Wolf was Sam’s Leadership teacher for two years and always pushed Sam to be the change they wished to see in the community. Ms. Klein-Wolf was always rooting for Sam and always had their back. Sam participated on the Varsity Soccer team all four years at Lincoln and found it to be an incredible experience. Sam found that being surrounded by a great group of people who supported them no matter what they had going on really helped them get through high school. So far in life, Sam considers successfully balancing academics, social life, athletics, clubs, internships, and family responsibilities to be their greatest accomplishment. While attending Lincoln, IB Coordinator Mr. Bliss was a fundamental source of support for Luna. She enjoyed going on intellectual journeys together through conversations after class. Luna was also deeply touched by his thoughtfulness when he reached out to her when she was struggling through stressful times. Luna’s experiences on Lincoln’s cross country and track teams were life-changing. She loved testing the limits of what she is physically capable of while running at varsity state and national competitions. She has found that running taught her so much about what it means to be the best version of yourself, and has equipped her to face difficult life challenges. Luna is most proud of her climate justice activism work. She is the founder and leader of the Effective Climate Action Project, a global youth climate initiative engaging in systemic activism worldwide. In addition, Luna dedicated a significant amount of time outside of school to teaching herself Japanese so that she could study abroad in rural Japan during her sophomore year. <image:caption>Undergraduate: Middlebury College Planned Major: Undeclared Recommended Book: "A Visit from the Goon Squad” - Jennifer Egan Abraham Barrow will begin his freshman year at Middlebury College in the Fall of 2022. He has not yet declared a major, but he is currently intrigued by International Politics and is considering minors in Economics and Arabic. As a student at Lincoln, Abraham was lucky enough to be able to work with IB Coordinator Mr. Bliss. Mr. Bliss had a profound impact on Abraham’s life during his four years at Lincoln, academically and personally. He was always there when Abraham needed someone to talk to in times of crisis and helped him hold it together when he needed it most. Abraham believes that he would have been significantly less successful in high school without Mr. Bliss. Outside of his academic pursuits, Abraham participated on Lincoln’s football team. Football was very different from the classes that dominated his days at school, and it provided both a community and structure that motivated him to work harder in all aspects of life. He formed bonds with his teammates and coaches unlike those he has formed elsewhere. The greatest honor Abraham received at Lincoln was being elected Captain of the football team. He will never forget the trust his teammates placed in him to lead them in both victory and defeat. The feeling of leading the team out of the tunnel every Friday remains very special to him. During the summer of 2022, before starting college, Abraham is working as a Global Product Development Intern for Mallory Safety and Supply. Keep up the good work, in and out of the classroom, Abraham!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Undergraduate: University of Texas at Austin Recommended Book: “A Six of Crows” - Leigh Bardugo “Dragon Hoops - Gen Luen Yang Alyssia began her freshman year at the University of Texas in the fall of 2023 and is enrolling in the Canfield Business Honors Program, with a minor in Applied Statistical modeling. When asked for somebody at Lincoln who had a significant positive impact on her and her success, Alyssia had two people in mind: Mr. Waugh and Mr. Hewitt. Mr. Waugh, the business teacher and FBLA/Business Club advisor, deeply cared for his students, and challenged Alyssia and other students to both accomplish more and incorporate creativity in class projects. His lessons provided real-world context, and he was able to follow the IB Curriculum closely while adding projects focused on hands-on experience, keeping students engaged. On a personal level for Alyssia, Mr. Waugh was always extremely supportive and a wonderful teacher. Mr. Hewitt, the maker space instructor, also was an important part of Alyssia’s high school learning experience, in how he challenged Alyssia to be at her best. Mr. Hewitt’s work in the maker space cultivated a drive to always build new things, and use unfamiliar tools. From teaching Alyssia graphic design to guiding her and other students on the basics of using a 3d printer, Mr. Hewitt showed all of his students that the only limitation they have when creating and building is their imagination. When asked what her favorite extracurricular activity was at Lincoln, Alyssia couldn’t recommend the Speech and Debate Club enough, and recommends that all incoming Freshmen join! She feels that the skills and maturity that Speech and Debate fosters in its members will play a big role in their success in school and their other extracurriculars, as it did for her. Alyssia is most proud of the mental health outreach program that she started while at Lincoln. Her own experience with mental health during the pandemic helped her to realize that there should be more open and honest discussions with students about mental health, helping to destigmatize it in her community. The success of starting a program from the ground up, reaching over 800 high school and middle school students, and successfully handing the reigns off to new leadership, is one of her proudest accomplishments at Lincoln, and she hopes it continues to exist for years to come. Congratulations, Alyssia, we can’t wait to see all that you accomplish!</image:caption>

His major is in computer engineering and his minor is in philosophy, due to his desire to dive into complex, seemingly unanswerable questions. When on the Constitution team, Jake was coached by Mr. Griffith, who had a significant positive impact on Jake’s success at Lincoln. According to Jake, Mr. Griffith is “one of the kindest people [I’ve] ever met,” gifting him many life lessons and an appreciation for US governance. While at Lincoln, Jake’s favorite extracurricular was being a part of the Red Cross Club, honing his organizational and leadership skills, and helping to build a strong community that allowed him to build a strong community, connect with his peers, and save lives. Jake is particularly proud of his ability to consider himself reliable. During her time at Lincoln, Gwyneth cited Ms. Meyer, her Mandarin teacher from Freshman to Junior year, as somebody who had a significant positive impact on her, igniting in her a passion to embrace learning. Gwyneth credits her with much of the success she had at Lincoln, especially as she grounded her through the challenging experience of freshman year online, sophomore year at the old building, to junior year at the new building. Gwyneth’s favorite extracurricular at Lincoln was the Constitution Team. She worked through even the toughest moments with her teammates and dedicated coach, who were practically her second family. The hours spent learning about civics and preparing for competition were highlights of Gwyneth’s Lincoln experience, and she would highly recommend Constitution Team to other students. When asked what her best accomplishment in life to date is, Gwyneth spoke about her work with FlockFeast focused on combating food insecurity and spreading compassion. <image:caption>Undergraduate: Brown University Planned Major: Computer Science Recommended Book: "1984” - George Orwell Alex Vassilev is enrolled at Brown University, starting in the fall. He plans to major in Computer Science. During his time at Lincoln, Alex cited Mr. Alonso as somebody that had a significant impact on him, stating that “[his] class brought me to decide that I wanted to work with mathematics all my life…” Alongside being an engaging instructor, Alex also loved the emphasis that Mr. Alonso placed on learning how to learn, and not simply memorizing formulas for a grade. Alex also said that Mr. Bliss played an important role as well in helping him through the IB program and fostering some of the most delightful & intellectual conversations he had while at Lincoln. Alex’s favorite extracurricular at Lincoln was the Chess Club, since it enabled him to regularly meet with a community of people who were just as passionate about chess as he was, and helped him grow confidence in himself over the board. When asked what his best accomplishment in life to date is, Alex spoke about organizing and hosting a charity fundraising tournament. The proceeds went towards AbleGamers, with the goal of developing assistive technology for people with disabilities. Good luck, Alex, we’re looking forward to seeing what you accomplish next!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Undergraduate: Stanford College Planned Major: Aeronautics & Astronautics Recommended Book: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Douglas Adams This fall, Tobias Schwab will begin studying Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University’s School of Engineering. At Lincoln, Tobias noted that Mr. Bliss, Lincoln’s IB Coordinator, was an important influence during his high school years, stating: “He’s witty, kind, and is amazing at guiding each student individually despite the hundreds in the IB program. Observing his impact on students inspires me to consider a career teaching later in life.” His favorite extracurricular was the We The People Constitution Team. Tobias shared: “Our unit of five worked closely together for over a year studying cases, legislation, and the US Constitution itself. Moving through regionals and state, we ultimately landed in DC. Naturally, the team grew very close. To this day, a large portion of my friends are those I met during Con Team.” When reflecting on accomplishments, Tobias said: “I feel that my most meaningful accomplishment is how I have combined my academic goals and interests with my social life.” He described hosting a last-minute attempt at the M3 Math Modeling Challenge at his house: “We knew we would be vastly unprepared compared to the Andovers and Exeters, who prepare for months. And yet, despite little time, the first people I asked (a select group that would never find themselves in the same room because of friend group differences) all said they would love to do it.” The team spent 14 hours straight working on a 30-page paper. “Ultimately, as expected, we did not win. Nonetheless, each member told me, even months afterward, that it was an experience like no other.” Congratulations, Tobias! We’re eager to see what you accomplish!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Undergraduate: Duke Universtiy Recommended Book: Outliers – Malcolm Gladwell, Project Hail Mary – Andy Weir Jimin Lee will be pursuing Neuroscience on the pre med track, with the possibility of adding a minor in Visual and Media Studies. During her time at Lincoln, Jimin was especially influenced by Ms. Hope, her art teacher. She explained: “Creating art has always been something very important to me, but she helped me see how I could use it for something bigger. She helped me cultivate the idea of ‘artivism’ and using creativity to speak up about issues I care about, encouraging me to express my thoughts and values by sharing my artwork with different organizations, exhibitions, and contests.” With Ms. Hope’s support, Jimin started the Artivism Club at Lincoln, which remains one of her proudest legacies. Her favorite extracurricular, was the Lincoln Girls’ Tennis Team. Jimin described it as a source of balance: “Even though it took hours of my time after school, tennis always felt like a respite from the often stressful nature of school and life, and helped me find balance when I needed it the most.” As for accomplishments, Jimin is proudest of the impact she has made as a graphic designer and artist. “Though graphic design started off as a small hobby I kept mainly to myself, I have now developed a love for sharing my art for larger causes and platforms,” she explained. This past year she completed her first paid project, designing a magazine for the Food Empowerment Project, an advocacy group for food justice and veganism. She also created graphics for the Portland Youth Climate Strike, helping raise awareness and mobilize her peers. “It is a great feeling to engage with local and larger communities in a way that is personally so meaningful to me!” Congratulations, Jimin, we’re excited to see how you continue blending science, creativity, and activism in college and beyond.</image:caption>
